Flu season is almost here! Influenza ("flu") is a contagious disease that spreads around the United States every winter, usually between October and May.

All flu viruses (there are several different strains) cause a respiratory illness that can last a week or more. Do not confuse influenza with a "stomach bug" or the "stomach flu" or a typical cold.  Flu symptoms include:

  • A sudden fever (usually above 101°F [38.3°C])
  • Chills and body shakes
  • Headache, body aches, and being a lot more tired than usual
  • Sore throat
  • Dry, hacking cough
  • Stuffy, runny nose
  • Many children may also vomit and have diarrhea.

The flu vaccine is the best way to protect against getting the flu. Keep your loved ones safe by vaccinating yourself and your children!

This year, the inactivated influenza vaccine (injection) is available for all children 6 months and older. We have the quadrivalent intramuscular vaccine, licensed and recommended for children 6 months and older and adults, including people with and without chronic medical conditions.

What about the FluMist (nasal spray)?

The FluMist vaccine was not recommended for children last year due to possible low efficacy against H1N1 (a specific influenza virus strain).  For the 2018-19 season, the composition of the FluMist vaccine has been adjusted to hopefully increase its effectiveness against the H1N1 strain.  The CDC and the ACIP recommendations state that there is no preference over the type of influenza vaccine for children over the age of 2.  The AAP states that the intramuscular vaccine is recommended over the FluMist- so their policy differs from 2 other national organizations.  At Concord Pediatrics, we would like to offer the FluMist, however the NH state program for childhood immunizations does not have FluMist in its supply - so we cannot stock this version of the vaccine for the 2018-2019 season.
